Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I welcome you all to the celebration of the special mass on this Sunday. Today, we gather to celebrate a twofold occasion – the Feast of Our Lady of Lebanon and the 320th anniversary of the passing of the Venerable Patriarch Estephan El Douaihy. It is truly providential that these two significant events have converged, for we know that the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Lebanon the patron saint of our homeland, held a special place in the heart, vocation, and service of Patriarch Al Douaihy.
We are pleased to be joined today by many friends of our Maronite Church. I especially welcome His Excellency Archbishop Charles Balvo, the Apostolic Nuncio, on his second visit to Our Lady of Lebanon Cathedral. Your Excellency, we thank you for joining us on this special occasion.
And of course, our dear friend and brother, Bishop Robert Rabbat, who comes to his second home when he joins the Maronites.
I also wish to acknowledge the presence of and welcome the diplomatic representatives of Lebanon: our Ambassador His Excellency Mr Milad Raad and his wife Mrs Roula Azar Raad, our Consul General in Sydney His Excellency Charbel Macaron and Mrs Joelle Macaron. I also welcome the Honourable Camille Dory Chamoun, Member of the Lebanese Parliament and Leader of the Lebanese National Liberal Party who is visiting us accompanied by Mr Camille Joseph Chamoun.
I welcome the clergy in particular our Vicar General Msgr Marcelino Youssef, the Maronite Sisters of the Holy Family and Sr Elham Geagea, Counsellor of the Congregation.
I would like to note that our brothers and sisters in the Orthodox Churches celebrate today the Feast of the Resurrection. We wish them a Happy Easter and pray that one day we may all celebrate together, one body in Christ.
As I mentioned earlier, the 1st Sunday of May is the feast of Our Lady of Lebanon. Every Maronite knows the prominent shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon sitting on top of the mountain of Harissa- Lebanon, with our blessed Mother stretching out her arms towards us. She stands atop of the mountain visible to the inhabitants of Beirut, Jounieh and the entire region, and to all visitors who come to Lebanon. As Pope John Paul II noted standing at that very location, Mary “watches over all the Lebanese people and over the many pilgrims who come from all directions to entrust to her their joys and their sorrows.” She beckons us to hold steadfastly to our Christian identity and our status as disciples of the Lord for it is our glory; it is our hope and our mission.
This feast takes a special meaning for us as we are preparing for the upcoming beatification of the Venerable Patriarch Estephan El Douaihy, on the Second of August 2024 in Bkerke, Lebanon. The Virgin Mary was at the heart of Patriarch El Douaihy’s mission and at the centre of his Patriarchal Seal. She was portrayed sitting on a throne carrying Jesus in her arms. As such, Our Lady would be on every official document that the Patriarch signed and sealed.
Patriarch El Douaihy is the first Maronite patriarch to be beatified. He is known as “the memory of the Maronite Church” because he, more than anyone else, made a determined effort to reorganise the Maronite Liturgy with clear focus on the liturgy of the Holy Mass. He was the main founder of the historiography of the Maronite Church, possessing an extraordinary knowledge of ancient Maronite documents. He was also a pioneer in writing about the history of Lebanon and the Middle East. During his long patriarchate from 1670 to 1704, he faced numerous challenges, including the oppressive measures of the Ottomans, yet he managed to uphold the authority and dignity of the Maronite Church and preserve it from any outside interference.
Patriarch El Douaihy can be described as a “hero in the school of holiness.” Despite facing daunting challenges, he travelled Lebanon on foot, which left a lasting memory of him as a saint among his people, as evidenced by the biography written by his deacon, the future Patriarch Simon Awad. This speaks to the profound spiritual legacy he has left behind, which our community in Australia rightly honours today through the installation of a statue outside this Cathedral.
Here, I wish to thank Mr Sarkis Jalalaty and his family who generously donated this statue. The way this came to be was indeed providential as Sarkis had ordered it from the renowned Lebanese sculptor Albert Basbous for his own home but then when he learnt about our celebration today, decided to donate it to Our Lady of Lebanon.
I thank the Patriarch El Doueihy committee in Australia whose members worked hard to organise this celebration today, and on their behalf, I would like to thank you Sarkis and your family for this timely and beautiful gesture.
Now I would like to continue my homily in Arabic:
تحتفل كنيستنا المارونية في هذا الأحد الاول من شهر أيار بعيد سيدة لبنان شفيعة هذه الكنيسة وهذه الرعية المباركة. كما تحتفل الكنائس الشرقية الارثودكسيّة بعيد الفصح ونجدّد الايمان معهم بقيامة المسيح ونصلي طالبين ومطالبين بتوحيد العيد من أجل شهادة مسيحيّة حقّة.
أما قداسنا اليوم فهو لمناسبة ذكرى مرور ثلاثِمئةٍ وعشرين (320) عامًا على انتقالِ المكرّم البطريرك مار اسطفانوس الدويهي إلى الملكوت السماوي، بعد مسيرةٍ إيمانيةٍ طويلة، تَوَّجَها بحبريةٍ بطريركية دامتْ أربعةً وثلاثين عامًا، في إحدى أكثر مراحل تاريخ لبنان صعوبة وظلماً وقهراً وفقراً واضطهاداً.
ويأتي هذا القداس في إطار الاستعداد الروحي والرعوي وضمن مسيرة التحضير لإعلان البطريرك الدويهي طوباوياً على مذابحِ الكنيسةِ الجامعة، في قداسٍ احتفالي سيُقام في لبنان، يوم 2 آب المقبل، وهي مناسبةٌ تصادف عيدَ ميلادِه ، أي بعد قرابةِ 400 سنة على ولادتِهِ في هذه الدنيا. هكذا، وعلى رغمِ مرورِ أكثر من ثلاثةِ قرون على تتميمِهِ رسالتَه في هذه الدنيا، وما يقاربُ أربعةَ قرونٍ على ولادتِهِ في هذا العالم، شاءت العناية الالهية أن تظهره نوراً من شرقنا الغالي، يعكس أنوار السيد المسيح، وشاءت العناية الالهيّة أيضاً أن تجعله ملحاً نتذوقه في طعامنا الروحي فتفيض نعم الرب علينا.
لقد أراد البطريرك الدويهي أن يكون الملحُ الذي ما عرف الفساد، وها هو اليوم يطيِّبُ عالمَنا بنفحة القداسة والرجاء، في زمن صعب ومرير، تكاثرت فيه أخبار الحروب والدمار ولا سيّما في الأراضي المقدسة ولبنان، كما في أوكرانيا والسودان. لقد بدّل بعض حكّام عالمنا الملحَ بالبارود، والطعامَ بالتجويع، والكفافَ بالجشع، والسلامَ بالحرب.
فما أحوج العالم اليوم الى قديسٍ جديد من لبنان، من لحمِنا ودمِنا، من أرضِنا ووطنِنا، من وطنِ الأرز والبخور، وطنِ الجبالِ الشامخة والوديانِ الوادعة. نَعم، قديسٌ جديد من لبنان الحرف والانسان، لأن لبنانَ كان وسيبقى أكثرُ من وطن، إنه رسالة، كما وصفهُ البابا القديس يوحنا بولس الثاني. ومع اطلالة كل قديس جديد أو قديسة نفهم اكثر معنى هذا الكلام النبوي.
لقد اقتبس البطريرك الدويهي نوراً من نور المسيح ليضيءَ ظلمات كنيستنا بمصباح العلم والمعرفة النابعة من التأمل بكلام الله. وانعكس عمله تجديداً ليتورجياً كان محوره القداس الالهي، الذي سهر على ترتيبِهِ وتصويبِهِ، ليعلّمَنا كيف نتفاعل مع سر الثالوثِ الأقدس في كل لحظةٍ من لحظاتِهِ، في كلِّ ما نراهُ أو نسمعُهُ أو نلمسُهُ أو نتذوّقُهُ خلالَ الذبيحةِ الإلهية وسر الافخارستيا المقدّس.
وعلى غرار البطاركة الموارنة من مار يوحنا مارون الى اليوم، كانت حياةُ المكرّم البطريرك الدويهي مليئةً بالعطاء والتضحياتِ والشهادة. فهو رجلُ صلاةٍ وإماتة، عانى الاضطهاد على أيدي حكامٍ ظالمين، واضُطرَّ مراتٍ كثيرة إلى مغادرةِ كرسيّهِ البطريركي والعيش مع باقي الإكليروس والشعب في المغاورِ والكهوف، ليحفظَ حياتَه وحياةَ شعبِهِ من جَوْرِ الظالمين. لقد حرص على القيام بنهضة مارونية عامة وفي كل الميادين، فاهتم أولاً بالتاريخ الماروني والمشرقي، وتَركَ لنا أكثرَ من أربعينَ كتاباً في اللاهوت والليتورجيا والفلسفة والتاريخ. وبنى أكثرَ من خمسٍ وثلاثين (35) كنيسة وديراً، فتح الكثير من المدارس في القرى والبلدات والأديار، أسّسَ المدرسةَ المارونية في حلب، حمى الطقسَ الماروني من التحوّل إلى اللاتينية، وأسّسَ الرهبانيةَ اللبنانية المارونية وثبّتَ قانونَها الرهباني.
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
In our celebration today, let us raise a thanksgiving prayer to the Lord for the grace of holiness and saints in our Church, let us thank the Lord for the Church in Lebanon for giving us and the world, this great and Holy Patriarch. And in the words of the Holy Pope Saint John Paul II said at the shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon on his historic visit, I conclude:
“Let us ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Lebanon, to watch over our country and its inhabitants and help us with her motherly tenderness to be worthy heirs of the saints of our land and to make Lebanon flourish again, this country which is one of the Holy Places God loves, because he came to make his home here and to remind us that we must build the earthly city with our eyes fixed on the values of the kingdom.” Amen.
